tableI am fascinated by the phenomenon known as spontaneous human combustion. What an amazing way to die.

The most recent occurrence of spontaneous human combustion popped up in my google reader today. It was a man in Ireland who burned to death in his home. Forensic pathologists were unable to explain how the man burned. He was found near an open fireplace but investigators at the scene could not establish a link between the man's death and the fireplace and there was no trace of an accelerant.
Professor Bernard Knight addresses the subject of spontaneous human combustion in a book he wrote on forensic pathology. In it Knight says that in deaths thought to be caused by spontaneous human combustion, the victims were almost always found near an open fireplace or chimney. I want to believe in this phenomenon which causes people to spontaneously burst into flames, but this little detail sort of spoils it for me.

I started playing tennis very late in life, about 4 months ago. I am 29 years old and despite the harsh truth that once a week lessons will probably not be enough to get me on the professional circuit, I still dream of playing in the French Open one day.

I make maps for a living which is pretty cool, I have a social life, enjoy film, music, art and yet I still find myself in my cubicle at work day dreaming about tennis and being really, really good at it.

I start out very badly, but I pick it up really fast. Soon I'm playing at a level only a few could ever dream. I enter an amateur tournament and win, but thats only the beginning. I give up my budding career in GIS and skyrocket to the professional circuit and win the french open. All of my friends, family, and the entire world is watching. This is my fantasy.

When I feel blue after a shitty tennis lesson I think of this scene from one of my favorite movies, The Royal Tenenbaums where Richie has a meltdown during a big match. He is in love with his (adopted) sister Margot who has just married Raleigh Sinclaire. Richie blows it, the love of his life is married to another man, and his poor play causes his father Royal to lose clout as well as money he wagered on the match. Baumer's bad day makes me feel better about my tennis fantasy not coming to real life.

three of my friends are registered for the tough mudder bear creek, pa event on april 9. im into it. i wish i signed up with them to do it honestly. the thing about me is, im all about challenges, because i just do things. sometimes i pack a bag and walk in the mountains for a few days, i usually walk out when i run out of food or have to go back to work. the thing about mountains is, they're all about challenges. its not easy to walk up a mountain, sometimes its not easy to walk down one either. sometimes the mountain is really flat and boring for a long time, thats not easy either. sometimes, you walk and walk and you don't even know if, or when its going to end. if you are walking to a shelter, you start to think, "did i pass the sign? was there a sign? if i passed it, maybe i should turn around. what happens if i did pass it, do i just keep going?" or if you are walking just for the day from one car to another 9 miles away, you might get to the car after walking all day and realize that you left your keys in the glove compartment of the first car. this actually happens. what do you do? you put your backpack on and walk back, even if it is 4pm and you probably won't get out until 8pm and you'll have to walk in the dark for a couple hours. i mean, what else are you going to do? or, some people who also like to walk around in the mountains will give you a ride. whatever, the point is you are supposed to climb your hill, everyone has a hill, or a mountain to climb, and you aren't supposed to just stand there staring at it. mountains are meant to be climbed, challenges overcome, and goals achieved so stop being a little bitch.

sometimes, you plan a trip with no map and what you approximated to be 12-14 miles by holding your goddamn finger up to the scalebar in a google map on your computer screen and "measuring" a meandering section of the appalachian trail from delaware water gap to wind gap, pennsylvania turns out to be 16 miles. this is disappointing. and this is what happened when i tried to take my friend and tennis instructor, will, who is one of the three friends training for the tough mudder, on a moderately strenuous day hike one brisk but sunny sunday in february. honestly, the first half of the day was dope. i strapped my $20 clamshell speakers from radioshack to the outside of my pack, plugged them into my droid and turned up the volume as we walked up the side of mt minsi on the pa side of the gap. we got to a shelter like a quarter mile after a hang-glider launch clearing with a pretty nice view out into a huge valley. cooked ramen at the shelter, ate a peanut butter crunch cliff bar, and some random beef jerky and trail mix i had leftover in my bag from two weeks ago. our lunch conversation: people's irrational fear of NOT having kids. conclusion: just be a rad uncle. its good enough. the rest of the day sucked. plus, i forgot to bring whiskey. all i wanted to do was get the fuck out of the woods but the trail was never-ending . and i knew will was getting more and more pissed at me for planning this piece of shit hike and taking him on death march through the snow in this piece of shit state of pennsylvania. fuck that hike, and fuck pennsylvania, that fuck feeling shitty about not having kids if you never have them. next time we're going to the catskills.

we have a dvr in our house but its mostly used by my roomie. i dont record very many shows. its pretty much the office and 60 minutes for me. but recently i started recording this totally amazing show on PBS called NOVA ScienceNOW. its hosted by this astrophysicist named Neil Degrasse Tyson. did i mention how fucking amazing this show is. oh how i love smart things and learning so much, even if i cant remember most of it, still you never know when you are going to get that one trivial pursuit question for the win. ive won trivial pursuit once recently against some stiff competition and im telling you, its a really great feeling. see picture below? thats me in the middle.

anyway, the most recent episode is called "whats the next big thing?" and its all about, well, the next big thing. like cell phones were a big thing, the television, radio, the internal combustion engine, the wheel, gravity, etc... the first segment is all about robots, because yeah, robots are probably going to be one of the next big things, right? i dont really agree with people fear of artificial intelligence and robots. i dont want to get into all that right now though. really i just wanted to express how utterly blown away i am at some of the robots i saw in this show. this one company, hanson robotics, created a philip k. dick robot, author of "do androids dream of electric sheep" which was the book the movie bladerunner was based on, they have this synthetic skin recipe and they use about 26 tiny motors to achieve this really impressive suite of facial expressions and the end result is just totally mind blowing. click the link below to watch the full episode FOR FREE!

In the 1950s dendrochronologists were making active efforts at finding the oldest living tree species, in order to use the analysis of the rings for various research purposes, such as the evaluation of former climates, the dating of archaeological ruins, and addressing the basic scientific question of maximum potential lifespan. Bristlecone pines in the White Mountains of California and elsewhere were discovered by Edward Schulman to be older than any species yet discovered. This spurred interest in finding very old bristlecones, possibly older than the Methuselah tree, aged by Schulman in 1957 at over 4700 years.

Donald R. Currey was a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying the climate dynamics of the Little Ice Age using dendrochronology techniques. In 1963 he became aware of the bristlecone populations in the Snake Range in general, and on Wheeler Peak in particular. Based on the size, growth rate and growth forms of some of the trees he became convinced that some very old specimens existed on the mountain, cored some of them, and found trees exceeding 3000 years old. Currey was not, however, able to obtain a continuous series of overlapping cores from WPN-114 (Prometheus). Here, stories diverge. It is not clear whether Currey requested, or Forest Service personnel suggested, that he cut down and section the tree in lieu of being able to core it. There is also some uncertainty as to why a core sample could not be obtained. One version has it that he broke or lodged his only long increment borer and could not obtain another before the end of the field season^[3], another claims he broke two of them, while another implies that a core sample was too difficult to obtain and also would not provide as much definitive information as a full cross section of the tree would.^[4]

so last night i went to one to one of the funnest parties ive been to in a while. i feel like i paced drinking fairly well - by the end of the party/night i was rolling around in the hosts dusty ass backyard, theres also a good chance that i spent some time on the floor inside the house as well, the birthday cake residue on my jeans and blazer would serve as evidence of this. we drove back to the house courtesy of a responsible pretty young lady who shall remain nameless. i woke up briefly in my boxers sleeping sideways on the bed, chyna was next to me as well as my designated driver and her pup too. slept some more, woke up, ate a little bacon egg & cheese and got started with my day.
later on this afternoon after picking up some much needed items from lowes using a card issued for store credit for returning a blue rhino propane tank i actually never purchased from them. im broke so the card really came in handy, when i returned the tank i was a little aggravated they wouldnt give me cash for returning the tank but whatever, today the card came in handy.
went back to the house, her and her roommate were in the middle of an all day house cleaning party. i end up taking a nap in the room with the dogs. slept for maybe two hours. next thing i remember im awake but im not. im sort of half controlling my thoughts, which is what i call the half of me that was awake, and the other half of my mind was still sort of dreaming, that would be the part where im not really awake. so im dreaming and thinking at the same time. the thinking part of me is actually trying to wake up, mainly trying to move my arms and legs, or any part of my body that will move. i cant, i try to move my limbs and i cannot. im essentially paralyzed. probably not permanently, but at least for the time being, i dont know how long it will take to regain control over my body, i dont know what to do. my instincts are telling me to call out for help, simultaneously, im also trying to concentrate on moving any part of my body. im trying to call out, "help" is what i am trying to say, but what im pretty sure was actually coming out was a weak short groan. as im concentrating on body movement, i realize that i am actally able to bend my arm at the elbow. my sleeping position is no different from the usual, which is comprised of only about three positions - on back, on stomach, or on side, this nap was sort of a hybrid stomach side thing. so im bending my elbow, ive got this weak groan going and i swear i can feel, not see, but feel someone coming into the room towards me to my rescue. as i feel her presence i start to worry that she might interpret my groaning as my having some sort of sex dream or something like that and that she would think that was funny, this brief thought sort of embarrasses me, the embarrassment passes.
seconds tick, im still not fully awake and still cannot move my limbs. i do not feel her helping me, in fact, im not really even feeling her presence at all now. the whole time i am semi-conscious of this happening i am literally terrified. possibly the most terrified i have been in my entire life other than the two previous times this has happened to me in the past.
seconds turn to minutes, i am very gradually starting to become more and more awake and conscious. and it seems like all of the sudden i regain control of my body, physically. i end up jerking my left leg in a way that i smash my shin against the night stand, the pain is sharp and i think it actually speeds up my regaining consciousness.
a little disoriented, i awaken finally, push myself up, the dogs stir and hop off the bed, i move to my feet, at this point im sitting with my head in my hands just trying to recover from the sheer terror i had just experienced in my sleep paralysis. on my feet and walking out of the bedroom into an empty kitchen now, the floor had just recently been thoroughly scrubbed, and the room still had a faint smell of cleaner. my friend and her housemate are in the living room listening to fleetwood mac. you could tell they had been working hard since i had first gone into the room for the nap, they had gelled as a cleaning team and were breaking together as i walked into the room to tell someone, anyone, what i had just experienced.
they both thought it was funny, not making fun, actually taking it seriously, but still seeing the humor in the experience. i was more in awe of the whole thing more than i found it funny. i wasnt offended, was just so glad that it was over.

so i've been doing quite a bit of two things lately - watching antiques roadshow and thrifting. it's fucked up because everytime i watch antiques roadshow i start fantasizing about bringing some piece of old junk to them and learning its worth a small fortune. recently my mom gave me a bunch of my dead grandmothers antique dutch gold jewelery to have appraised and sell. i bullshitted hard on actually doing it, yes in theory its a great idea, i pretty much say yes to every single thing anyone ever asks me. but in practice i realized the right place for dead grandma's jewelery was antiques roadshow. who the hell knows where or when they're gonna show up? my mom just asked me to give back the jewelery because i was taking too long with it.
and now that i've been doing more and more thrifting lately i seem to be spending more time in the "miscellaneous" sections looking for some forgotten, overlooked, undiscovered treasure i can take down to the good old antiques roadshow and get rich off of, thats actually not true, i have been having some luck finding great men's clothing. the point is i still do make it a point to browse the miscellaneous section every chance i get. i got houses and cars to buy and shit you know what i'm saying? in the meantime i guess i'll just have to settle for random books about building stuff with plywood and old national geographic map sets with missing maps for $4 i think i may have paid too much for.

im fucking drowning in debt right now. im sitting on my front porch stealing wireless from some unsecured wireless network just to make this post because i dont even have money to pay the past due amount to have the internet service, let alone our "gold" cable package turned back on, its been off since sometime between last wednesday when i left for cape cod and saturday night when i returned. i just went through a fucking huge pile of mail, all bills except for a couple of pieces of shit, and i feel like a poor person.
i shouldnt though, i will say, i make decent money, above average for a recent college graduate and i do have a promising future, provided i can get the fuck out from under this pile of shit i somehow got myself into.
i havent been the most responsible kid with my money and credit. i have two fucking motorcycles in the garage, one is half taken apart, the other is brand new, im still making payments. it would have been fine to have bought the new one and have just one, but im stupid and bought the new one without having properly prepped the old one to be sold. right now it is half taken apart and needs about $300.00 worth of parts plus a little wit and elbow grease before i can even think about posting it for sale online. what a fucking huge mistake.
im also in some credit card debt. which is probably normal but one of my cards has a fucking 28.99% apr and every month i am getting fucked with interest. i am carrying the highest balance out of three cards on that one too so that sucks. i cant apply for another 0% apr card until all three of my accounts are in good standing which wont be for another month at least.
i find myself paralyzed when i start thinking about this. my mind goes so fast and i start thinking about stuff like, how am i going to maintain relationships, be happy, do stuff, etc. if i cant get myself out of this situation? what has my life become? i used to be good, i would pay half of my balance on a credit card in one fucking shot, what happened?
